Question

How do I check a file attachment for viruses?

Answer

If you think you've received an email message with an attachment containing a virus, please make sure that you do not open the attachment. To check a file attachment for a virus, you'll need to first save the file to your computer and then scan the file with antivirus software. Please note, saving a file that contains a virus won't harm your computer; only opening a file that contains a virus can potentially harm your computer.

Just remember, to prevent your computer from being infected by a virus, you should avoid opening attachments from people you don't know until you scan the file with antivirus software. If you believe your computer may have been infected, please run an antivirus program and then follow the software's advice on how to remove the virus.

To check an attachment for a virus in Juno 3.0, 4.0, or 5.0:

  1. In the message list of the Read screen, select the message that contains the attachment you want to save.

  2. In the upper-right corner of the message area, click Show Attachments to display the attachment and double-click the attachment you want to save.

  3. In the File Attachment dialog box, click Save File.

  4. In the Save Attachment dialog box, click the Save in arrow to select the folder where you want to save the attachment and then click Save.

  5. Follow the instructions of your antivirus software to scan the file you saved for viruses.

If a virus was not detected, or if the antivirus software cleaned the file, you can open the attachment.

To check an attachment for a virus in attachment in Juno 2.0:

  1. In the message list of the Read screen, select the message that contains the attachment you want to save.

  2. In the message area, double-click the attachment (which shows up as an icon).

  3. In the Attachments dialog box, click Save File.
