I received a message referring to something called "MIME." What is MIME?

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and is the modern standard for handling email attachments and is the standard Juno uses.

You may receive a message referring to MIME for one of the following reasons:

  • A message was sent to you using an older standard such as UUcode or BinHex.

Some email programs still use older standards, such as UUcode or BinHex. If a message was sent to you using one of these older standards, you will get a message referring to "MIME" and probably will not be able to view the attachment. The sender will have to resend the message using an email program that supports MIME. Conversely, for someone to view the attachments you send, he or she needs to use an email program that supports MIME.

  • You are a member of Juno's free email service using Juno 1.49 or earlier.

Because Juno's free email service members cannot send or receive attachments, you may also receive a message referring to MIME if someone tries to send you an attachment. To send and receive attachments, you will need to upgrade your Juno software and service. If you would like to upgrade your Juno software, you can download the latest version for free by going to http://my.juno.com/s/download.

To get a copy of the Juno CD-ROM in the mail, call us toll-free at 1-800-654-5866, 5 days a week from 9 AM to 9 PM ET. Please note, there is a one-time $10.00 processing fee for the CD-ROM that includes shipping and handling.

  • You received a notice that one of your messages could not be delivered.

You may also see "MIME" when you receive a notice that one of your messages could not be delivered. The notice may say something similar to "This is a MIME-encapsulated message." If you receive one of these messages, please double-check the accuracy of the email address you tried to send the message to and then resend the message to the correct address.
