How do I Turn On or Off Email Scanning in Norton AntiVirus? Note: For Norton 2012 product information, please click here.
Email Scan protects you from the threats hidden in email attachments by automatically scanning all incoming and outgoing messages. Norton AntiVirus supports all email programs that use either POP3 or SMTP protocol. To configure Email Scanning in Norton AntiVirus: - Start Norton AntiVirus and click Settings, in the Internet Settings or Network section.
- Scroll to the Email Scan or Email Protection section, and turn scanning On or Off.
- Click on the Configure link to set the following options:
- What to scan
Scan incoming email messages - Automatically scans all incoming email messages and attachments. Scan outgoing email messages - Automatically scans all outgoing email messages and attachments.
- How to increase protection
Scan outgoing messages for suspected worms - Scans your outgoing emails for worms. If you turn this on, you can choose Automatically remove [recommended] to have Norton AntiVirus delete the threat, or Ask me what to do, which lets you determine whether an email is deleted, quarantined, or sent.
- What to do when scanning email messages
Protect against timeouts - Prevents your email from "timeout" errors when Norton AntiVirus scans large attachments. Display icon in System Tray - Displays an icon while Norton AntiVirus scans your email. Display progress indicator - Displays a progress bar during scanning. - Click OK when finished.
Note: If you turn off Email Scanning you'll see a Security Request box asking you to select how long Email Scanning should be turned off. Choose the time from the drop down menu, and then click OK.
