Common Connection Errors / Solutions Error - The list of phone numbers that can be used to dial up Juno has changed (Juno 2.0) This problem can occur if you selected the wrong modem manufacturer and model during your modem setup. Once you have selected your modem, Juno tests the modem with an initialization string that should enable it to connect with Juno's central computers. If you are unsure of your exact modem manufacturer and model, you may have selected a modem with the wrong initialization string. You can use a program on your computer called HyperTerminal to learn what kind of modem you have. Once you get this information, you can try to set up your modem again. If you learn about your modem and cannot find it in Juno's modem database, you will need to add your modem to Juno's modem database.
To use Terminal or HyperTerminal to learn about your modem: - Close any programs that are running, including Juno and other communications programs (for example, fax software).
- To start HyperTerminal, click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to HyperTerminal, and click HyperTerminal.
- Set HyperTerminal to whichever COM port your modem is currently connected to.
- In the blank terminal window, type ATI0 and press Enter.
- Repeat step 3, typing ATI1 through ATI9. These commands are standard in many modems and the response your modem returns to these commands may give you more information about your modem.
When viewing your modem responses, pay particular attention to the following: - The name of a modem manufacturer. For example, U.S. Robotics or Supra.
- The response of ATI3. If RPI or "Rockwell Protocol Interface" is returned, then your modem is a Rockwell Protocol Interface (RPI) modem and needs a special configuration.
- The response of ATI6 or ATI7. If RC288 or RCV288 is returned, then your modem needs a special initialization string. When setting up your modem manually, use this initialization string: &F&C1&D2&K3%C0 (unless you have a Supra modem. If you have a Supra modem, you should be able to set up your modem automatically).
For more information on using HyperTerminal, please see your Windows user manual. Adding a modem If your modem is not part of Juno's modem database, you will have to add it. Before you can do this, you will need to find out technical information about your modem, as well as the correct commands to use in its initialization string. To find this information out, contact your modem manufacturer (or refer to your modem manual) and ask for a string that will command your modem to use the following settings. - Set factory defaults
- Hardware flow control on
- DCD (Data Carrier Detect) set to follow line carrier
- Disconnect on DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal
- Data compression off
With this information, you can add your modem to Juno. To add your modem to Juno's modem database in Juno 2.0: - Go to the Connection menu and select Modem Setup.
- On the Modem Setup screen, click Manual Modem Setup.
- Click Add New Modem.
- The Add Modem Entry screen will appear. Click the Modem list arrow to select a modem from that list that may be similar to your modem.
For example, if there is a modem in the list by the same manufacturer as your modem, select it. If you do not see a similar modem in the list, select the Hayes Compatible modem that has the same speed as your modem.
- In the Modem name box, type the name of your modem or My Modem.
- In the Setup commands box, edit the initialization string with the technical information from your modem manufacturer or modem manual.
- Click OK. Your modem name will now appear in the Modem list. Select it and complete the manual modem setup.
