Error - Juno is unable to set up your modem (Juno 5.0)

You may get this error message for one of the following reasons:

  • The modem is not turned on and connected.
  • Another program is using the modem.
  • There is a port or IRQ conflict.
  • The modem is not properly functioning.

Let our new Connection Wizard pinpoint your problem!

The Juno Connection Wizard is our newest help tool. Download it today to identify and resolve many common issues that may prevent you from successfully connecting to the Internet.

To use the Juno Connection Wizard, you will need to have a Windows Operating System (other than Windows NT) running on your computer. If you cannot download the Juno Connection Wizard from your computer, simply download it onto a diskette from any computer with Internet access and then install it on the computer you would like to fix.

Click here to download the Connection Wizard.

To resolve this problem, perform these troubleshooting steps in the following order. After you perform a step, try to connect again. If you get the same error message, move on to the next step.

A. Check your modem

Check that the modem is on (if it is an external modem) and that it is securely connected to the phone jack and the computer. Reset the modem either by turning it off and then on again (if it is an external modem) or by restarting your computer (if it is an internal one).

B. Disable background programs

Make sure that no other software program (such as Web browsers, fax software, phone answering software, and online screen savers) is using your modem. If you have such programs running, you should close or disable them.

To close other software programs that may be using your modem:

  1. Close any program that you may have open.
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  3. On the screen that appears, select a program in the list and click End Task. The screen will closes.

Important! End task on all programs except Explorer and Systray. These two programs are the only programs youshould not close.

  1. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for every program in the list.

C. Check for IRQ conflicts

  1. On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and click Properties.
  2. On the System Properties screen, click the Device Manager tab.
  3. In the list devices, if you see a yellow exclamation mark next to the Modem icon, then there is an IRQ conflict. This means that your modem port and another piece of hardware are trying to use the same IRQ. Refer to your modem or computer manufacturer's support information or help for more information.

D. Uninstall and reinstall your modem

To uninstall your modem:

  1. Close all software programs that may be using your modem.
  2. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Modems icon.
  4. On the Modems Properties screen, select your modem from the list and click Remove.
  5. Click Close.

To reinstall your modem:

  1. Shut down and restart your computer.

Note: When you restart your computer, Windows will detect your modem and reinstall it for you.

  1. The Add New Hardware Wizard will appear.
  2. To reinstall your modem, follow the instructions on the screens of the Add New Hardware Wizard. If Windows cannot find the necessary drivers for your modem, please refer to your modem manufacturer.
